Intel posts profit loss despite sales increase

Despite a considerable increase in sales, Intel had to accept a lower profit in the fourth quarter of 2021. One of the reasons for this is a penalty in the millions imposed on the IT group by the US government.

There would have been more in it

An increase in sales is usually accompanied by an increase in profits. This is at least the case with traditional companies that have been on the market for many years. Intel, despite its long existence, has now made it clear that this does not always have to be the case. Comparing the fourth quarter of 2021 with that of the previous year, the semiconductor producer was able to increase its sales by just under $550 million to $20.525 billion. The situation is different when it comes to profit. Here, the company was still able to show 5.857 billion US dollars in the fourth quarter of 2020. A year later, the profit is “only” 4.623 billion U.S. dollars.

Penalty payment due to delay in delivery of supercomputer

What at first appears to be a calculation error, has a cause that lies outside the everyday business of the chip manufacturer. Thus, the USA has pronounced a sensitive penalty in the millions against the company. The reason for this is a delayed delivery of a supercomputer. This naturally meant that the otherwise good figures had to be cut back. However, the penalty of millions is not the only reason for the slump in profits. On top of that, the demand for Intel chips for notebooks has decreased massively. This affected the fourth quarter of 2021 in particular.
