The next Apple smartphone could finally offer the innovation that fans have been hoping for for quite some time. The iPhone 14 Pro is supposed to come without a notch and present the selfie camera in a punch hole instead. There is also talk of a cheaper iPhone Max.
iPhone 14 Pro without notch?
The iPhone 14 Pro will reportedly do without a notch. Accordingly, the front camera of the Pro model and the Pro Max variant will sit in a punch hole. This reports The Elec with reference to informed persons.
The components needed for unlocking via Face ID, such as the dot projector that projects infrared light dots onto the user’s face, would then have to be installed behind the actively used display – but exactly how Apple plans to accomplish this feat remains unclear.
However, the larger notch would remain in the non-pro models of the iPhone 14, according to the report. Thus, the report once again confirms the rumors about a punch hole in the upcoming Apple smartphone, which have been going on for quite some time.
Apple has been using the notch, the elongated cutout at the top of the display, since the iPhone X in fall 2017 and also on the current iPhone 13.
New iPhone lineup in 2022?
Furthermore, the report hints at big changes in next year’s iPhone lineup. According to the report, the iPhone Mini model, which was only introduced in 2020, will give way to a more affordable Max variant.
The two Pro models with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays will be joined by two Non-Pro models with the same screen sizes. Probably called iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max. That would be the death blow for compact smartphones below the 6-inch mark at Apple as well.
A new and completely redesigned camera system is also expected with a 48-megapixel camera that is supposed to output a 12-megapixel image by combining four pixels each. The effective pixel size would thus increase to a whole 2.5 micrometers and thus be significantly higher than previous smartphone image sensors. The iPhone 13 Pro Max currently has 1.9 micrometers.
