So far, we only know Polestar as an electric manufacturer of modern sedans with electric drives. Now the electrifying Volvo partner has announced a newcomer for October – the Polestar 3. What you can’t tell from the name is that the young company is deviating from its typical forms. Thus, the third Polestar in the bunch is not a sedan. This time, they want to bring an e-SUV to the streets of the world.
A luxury sled with many features
The first information about the Polestar 3 already sounds promising. After all, there really is a lot on the credit side here. In addition to an impressive range, the new SUV with electric drive should also be able to offer autonomous driving. That we would expect an SUV is not new. However, the company has been extremely cagey about the vehicle’s looks in recent months. All we got to see were pictures that showed the Polestar 3 with a cover. Here, only the shapes could be made out. The image that has now been published is far more revealing. Here we can see the SUV from the side. And we really like what we see here. The long wheelbase is striking, which not only indicates a large battery, but also a comfortable interior. The other design is more reminiscent than ever of Volvo’s latest vehicles.
Premiere in October
While it is still some time before the first models of the Polestar 3 will be on the roads, the first details about the vehicle are already available. In particular, Polestar has commented on the engine. The company wants to install a dual motor that is supposed to be able to drive the e-SUV over 600 km in combination with a presumably large battery. However, Polestar still owes us more information about the battery. We hope that all details will be available at the world premiere in October at the latest. On the other hand, the company is really talkative about the autonomous driving of the Polestar 3. A lot seems to be possible in the future. In cooperation with Nvidia, the company has apparently developed a chip that is supposed to enable level 3 autonomous driving. A reliable LiDAR sensor is to be used here.
Another competitor for Tesla
Many potential buyers of the Polestar 1 or 2 ultimately backed away from their purchase decision because price stood in their way. With a Tesla Model 3, you can also get away with it far more cheaply in a direct comparison. But with the Polestar 3, the company now seems to be attacking the higher-end Teslas as well. So, the Model Y and also the Model X in particular have to fear for their success. After all, the company plans to make the E-SUV exceedingly sporty. Since the dual motor is apparently without alternative and a single-motor version is not up for grabs, this certainly seems to be the case.
Polestar expands production
It should be possible to pre-order the Polestar 3 from its world premiere in October this year. However, one will still have to wait some time to be able to take a seat behind the wheel of the E-SUV. To be more precise, the production lines are scheduled to start rolling in spring 2023. Polestar will celebrate a North American premiere. In addition to China, the USA will also be used as a production site. The company will need the new factories in view of its ambitious plans for the next few years. As sluggishly as the company’s own range was built up with Polestar 1 and 2, things are now set to move ahead quickly. After the Polestar 3 is launched next year, the Polestar 4 is scheduled for 2024. Since the electric car manufacturer is planning a new car for each of the next three years, strictly speaking the Polestar 5 should arrive in 2025.
