Rumor mill: OpenAI is probably working on its own search engine

OpenAI has made a name for itself with its chatbot ChatGPT. But apparently this success is not enough for the tech company. Now the company is probably planning its own search engine internally. What is the truth behind the rumors?

Is OpenAI becoming competition for the tech giants?

Having what is probably the most successful and world-renowned chatbot on the market does not seem to be enough for OpenAI. Rather, the company now seems to want to apply the capabilities and strengths of its in-house artificial intelligence (AI) to other areas. More specifically, it can currently be assumed that OpenAI is working on its own search engine. This would represent direct competition to Google and Bing from Microsoft.

Ominous URL has the rumor mill buzzing

The whole thing has not yet been confirmed by OpenAI. So how does one come to the conclusion that the company is working on a search engine? The linchpin is the URL named search.chatgpt.com. This can always be associated with OpenAI.

In addition, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently told Lex Podcast that he would like to be the person who succeeds in combining a search engine and a language model. He also gave a broadside to industry king Google.

Altman said that he would like to build a better copy of the search engine. He thinks there might be a better way “to help people find information, summarize it and act on the information.”

Is the unveiling coming soon?

If the words of industry insiders in Analytics India Mag are to be believed, the internal plans at OpenAI are already much more tangible. A date has already been set for the official unveiling of its own search engine. The date could be May 9, 2024.

Only time will tell what is actually true about the rumors. What is certain is that the people in charge at Microsoft and Google may well be shaking in their boots. This is particularly the case with Google. While Microsoft’s search engine Bing already has a voice assistant based on ChatGPT, Google is lagging behind in this discipline.
