Synology 2022 AND BEYOND – Innovations and new features

The Taiwanese NAS expert Synology is continuously working on the further development of the Synology DSM, the operating and management system for the entire NAS product range. Feedback from many users has been taken on board, improving the user experience for home users while reducing management overhead. This includes not only recent improvements in the current DSM 7.0, but also the upcoming 7.1 update. Among numerous other items, the following highlights, some of them long-awaited, can be expected with the new version:

  • SMB Multichannel Support
  • improved Fibre Channel support
  • Automatic detection of suspicious activity in Active Insight
  • Bare metal backups for macOS
  • Full backups for DSM

Updates for long established tools

Furthermore, numerous applications are updated, respectively new apps are available. For example, Synology Drive and MailPlus will receive an update. This is intended to simplify and promote collaboration within the company, especially in times of home offices.

New features for backup and restore

Active Backup for Business now covers 2.5 million users, with an enterprise adoption rate of 25.2%. Upcoming updates are expected to give administrators more control and flexibility over backups. In addition, after the update, both a full backup of DSM can be created and bare-metal backup will be available for macOS machines.

Synology C2 Cloud as a comprehensive SaaS offering

A large part of the innovations concerns the Synology C2 Cloud, which is intended to appeal to less experienced users in particular and offers them a secure, cost-effective public cloud solution. The data is not stored and processed on the NAS, but in a German C2 data center in Frankfurt am Main. AES-256 encryption is used, so the SaaS applications not only use secure transmission, but make life easier.

C2 Password is a free password manager within the C2 Cloud and can be used to conveniently store passwords and retrieve them when needed. It can also be used to share files and other sensitive information. Currently, C2 Password is available as a browser add-on, and will soon be available as an app for iOS.

C2 Transfer offers an encrypted file transfer and file request service via the cloud. A big focus is on making it as easy to use as possible. Users and accounts can be managed easily, data can be encrypted and watermarks can be included. This is joined by an identity check to ensure that files can only be downloaded by authorized persons.

C2 Backup offers an easy way to still backup without any locally installed backup apps. In doing so, the cloud-based solution simply backs up physical devices as well as SaaS data directly to the C2.

C2 Storage for Hybrid Share enables the use of an on-demand cloud solution along with on-premises NAS devices. This simplifies cross-site file sharing and collaboration and reduces the bandwidth required for synchronization.

A new Surveillance Station is coming

Version 9.0 of the popular Surveillance Station brings a host of new features and is expected to make the entire platform even more powerful. The user interface will be improved, making not only more effective video surveillance, but also the setup, even of larger surveillance systems an easy task. It will also be possible to encrypt video footage with a separate key and stream recordings directly to the C2 Surveillance Cloud.

New router with Wi-Fi 6 support

At the latest, the new RT6600ax router can increasingly put traditional wired connections on the backburner. The tri-band Wi-Fi 6 router delivers up to 6.6 Gbit/s with its 4×4 MIMO antennas, using the 5.9 GHz frequency band. A 2.5 GbE port serves as the connection to the wired LAN. The router’s software also gets an update. Synology Router Manager (SRM) 3.1 opens up the mesh function as well as support for multiple SSIDs and VLAN.
