Vodafone: Upload via cable to become faster

Not all Internet connections are the same. There can be significant differences between the connections, regardless of the bandwidth provided in the contract. This is particularly noticeable in a direct comparison between fiber optic and copper cable connections. If you take a closer look at the upload speeds, it quickly becomes clear that modern fiber optics are clearly ahead. But Vodafone now wants to eliminate this commonly known weakness of the cable connection step by step.

More upload via TV cable

Without further ado, the provider wants to test whether a higher upload is possible via the conventional TV cable connection. The company has now officially announced this plan through its company spokesman Thorsten Höpken to our colleagues at Golem.de. In doing so, Höpken stated that they would like to start soon

“…to test upstream speeds of up to 100 megabits per second in initial pilot regions.”

Given the current maximum of 50 MBit / s in the upload, this plan is quite commendable. Höpken himself is optimistic in this regard:

“Depending on the expansion and evolution stage of the respective network area, even higher upload speeds will be possible in the future”

However, with user interests moving more and more towards streaming, Vodafone wants to try its focus on the download speeds of its connections first. If the gigabit upgrade is successful, one can then increase the upload in the same course. But Vodafone’s long-term goal is also clear. For example, the company obviously wants to move away from old-fashioned copper cable and towards modern and fast fiber optic technology.

“On the other hand, as part of our network segmentations, we are bringing more fiber optics into the coaxial area of the network in order to strengthen the network and further increase performance.”

Step-by-step transition to fiber

Customers of the company have been waiting for some time to switch to modern technology. Vodafone is also aware of this. CEO Vodafone Germany, Hannes Ametsreiter, said recently in this regard:

“We are segmenting our cable network more and more. The cable network is becoming a fiber network over time. There are now 1 GBit/s possible, in the future it will be 10 GBit/s or more.”
