Western Digital has launched the WD_Black SN850X with an impressive 8 terabytes of storage space back in 2022. This SSD is particularly interesting for gamers and IT professionals who require high performance and a lot of storage space.

  • Read speed: Up to 7,200 MB/s
  • Write speed: Up to 6,600 MB/s
  • Storage capacity: 8 terabytes
  • Special features: M.2 format, heat sink available

Technical details and performance

The WD_Black SN850X impresses with extremely high transfer rates. It achieves read speeds of up to 7,200 MB/s and write speeds of up to 6,600 MB/s. These values are ideal for gaming, video editing and other demanding applications. The SSD uses the M.2 2280 format and is compatible with many modern mainboards, notebooks and even the PlayStation 5.

Thanks to PCIe Gen 4 and four lanes, the SN850X offers outstanding performance. In addition, the SSD supports random read and write operations with up to 1.2 million IOPS, which ensures lightning-fast access times. This is particularly beneficial for applications that require fast data access, such as launching games or loading large files.

Design and cooling

The design of the WD_Black SN850X is not only functional, but also aesthetically pleasing. The SSD is available both with and without a heat sink. The heatsink helps to keep temperatures low and maintain performance even during intensive use. Without the heatsink, the SSD measures 80.01 x 22.1 x 3.81 mm, while with the heatsink it is 10.41 mm high.

The heat sink is particularly important for users who want to operate the SSD in a system with a high thermal load, such as a gaming PC or a professional work computer.

At the same time, the manufacturer is now also offering the variant with 4 terabytes of storage space with a heat sink. Previously, this was only available without a heatsink. This makes it ideal for use in a gaming PC, but also in the PlayStation 5, which has a cooler as a basic requirement.

Price and availability

The WD_Black SN850X with 8 TB is now available in the manufacturer’s store. The version without heat sink costs around 954 euros, while the version with heat sink costs around 1,017 euros. The version with 4 TB and heat sink costs 539.99 euros, while the model without cooling, which has been available for some time, can be purchased for around 300 euros.
