Western Digital: Local access to MyCloud data possible again

Western Digital recently fell victim to a cyberattack, the consequences of which are still clearly felt. The cloud service MyCloud is still offline, which leads to considerable functional impairments. Now the company has announced that at least access to locally stored data is possible.

Since the end of March, WD MyCloud has been experiencing significant impairments as a result of a cyberattack. We reported. Little has changed in the situation since then. Western Digital continues to keep the cloud service offline to deal with the aftermath of the attack. As of now, it is impossible to predict how long this situation will last. For Western Digital, as well as for all those who rely on the company’s cloud services, this spells disaster: NAS storage solutions with cloud access represent the core of the business. If this fails for several weeks, trust in the company is likely to suffer considerably. This is all the more true as Western Digital has already attracted attention in the past due to security problems.

Locally stored data accessible

Now the company has announced that during the offline time, access to locally stored data is possible after all. To do this, a Local Access account must be created, which can be done via a Mac or Windows computer that is on the same network as the Western Digital device. Any web browser must be used to access the storage device’s dashboard, where the Local network access feature must be enabled. Afterwards, a corresponding access can be created.
