Windows 11 problem: Expired certificates cause crashes for included apps

New problem under Windows 11: Since 01.11. some supplied digitally signed applications may no longer be executable. The reason for this is an expired MS certificate, which causes problems.

New Windows 11 problem

A certificate that expired on October 31, can cause problems on some systems running Windows 11. So it can happen that affected applications or parts of them can no longer be opened or used. Microsoft has confirmed the problems and released an update, but it is not yet a final solution.

The problem is a certificate that Microsoft used to digitally sign some Windows 11 apps and app components. In doing so, some programs are affected by the Windows 11 issue, which Microsoft lists in a support document released on Nov. 03.

Affected are:

  • The snipping tool for screenshots in Windows 11
  • The account page and landing page in the Settings app (only in S mode)
  • Touch keyboard, voice input, and emoji panel
  • Input method editor user interface (IME UI)
  • First steps and tips

Update released: be sure to download

To fix the problem, Microsoft has already released the update KB5006746 on October 21, 2021, which should fix the problem at least partially. On November 05, the full bug fix followed with Update KB5008295, which is supposed to fix all the mentioned issues.

So downloading and installing the Windows 11 update is highly recommended, Microsoft writes about the scope of the patch:

Updates a known issue that may prevent some of you from opening or using certain built-in Windows apps, such as the Snipping Tool, Emoji Panel, or on-screen keyboard.

So, Windows 11 update KB5008295 is something you should download as soon as possible. As always, it can be downloaded and installed from the Windows Update section.
