Scope of delivery

Delivered the OnAir Mobile Streaming Kit in a thin cardboard box, where basically the whole website of the item has been printed. Accordingly, we were able to glean all of the important information from the packaging. Even the background image on the packaging can be examined without the blur filter on the website. Inside the package there is a black plastic wrapping, in which the individual elements have finally been clamped.

We already touched on the entire scope of delivery in the introduction – but now we’ll go into more detail. Gelid supplies apart from the tripod with universal cell phone and camera mount, a Bluetooth remote shutter, the shotgun microphone with windscreen, a simple portable LED light with mount and three dimmers in different colors, which we can charge through the additionally supplied micro USB cable. With that, you basically have everything you need to get started.

Design & workmanship

The only question now is how the quality of each element proves to be. This is an important factor in ultimately judging the usability of the OnAir Mobile Streaming Kit. We’ll start with probably the most important component – the tripod with the cell phone and camera holder. The three feet are made of a durable black plastic and can be extended to 180 mm in diameter. On an even or slightly sloped surface, the stand stands without any problems, although a rubberized underside could provide more grip. Inside the feet is also the small Bluetooth remote shutter, which you can easily get out by pressing lightly. With the wheel above the feet, in front of the accent lifted off with red, the feet are fixed at the current position with turning the wheel.

Above that, the tinkering fun begins – Here you have a ball that can be rotated in any direction and can be locked in its current position with a wheel sticking outward away. At the top there is a screw thread on which the cell phone and camera mount can be screwed. Adjusting positions is important, so here again there are two wheels to turn. The clamping range of the holder starts at 5 cm and ends at 8 cm. Thus, as good as all current cell phone models can be used with the kit.

To extend the kit, an arm can be attached that extends to the side and upwards, where the microphone and LED lighting can be attached. The assembly is super easy and quick. Everything is screwed together in about 5-10 minutes. However, it is a bit of a shame that the individual elements all look quite cheap and the kit does not feel particularly high-quality in the hand. The plastic has unclean edges at one and the other and you also have to tighten the adjustment options quite a bit so that the desired position is held. Whether these small conspicuities will lead to problems further down the line will only be seen in practice.

Practical test

Without wanting to anticipate too much – our experiences were rather mixed. We will try to explain why this is the case in the following. First, something good about the cell phone holder. The clamp works flawlessly and clamps the phone securely and firmly to the tripod. Even with a lot of wobbling, the phone doesn’t fall out of position. If you take the kit with you into bumpy areas, you don’t need to worry about that. However, you should then dismantle the bracket for the LED lighting and the microphone, as they then like to turn in circles and keep adjusting themselves, even though they have been tightened.

So let’s move on to the three included gadgets. We want to give special praise for the small included LED light and its plastic dimming caps. With this, dimmed, warm and cold light can be simulated. The whole thing also works quite simply and well – thus fulfills its raison d’être in all measures. The same applies to the Bluetooth trigger. The connection, regardless of whether iOS or Android, works smoothly and without problems. Perfect for taking selfies or videos of yourself without directly operating the smartphone.

However, it’s a bit different with the shotgun microphone – 3.5mm jack in a kit that is basically aimed at smartphones is a bit more difficult. Nowadays, most smartphones don’t have a 3.5 mm jack, but occasionally you still see it on lower-end smartphones. If Gelid had thought a bit about this, they would have included adapters for Lightning and USB-C or mini-USB in the scope of delivery. Nevertheless, you do not lose much with the microphone, since all phones do a more than solid job with the audio quality, which the microphone can only reach to a limited extent. The classic noise m background and audio quality of an inexpensive headset best describes the experience here.

Conclusion

So what can we conclude about the Gelid OnAir Mobile Streaming Kit? Does it serve its purpose or can you do without it altogether? The kit is a simple addition to everyday photography and filming. The tripod works flawlessly, the adjustment options are great and easy to use. The LED lighting, including caps for changing the light color, are a fitting and good addition to the kit. Unfortunately, it is a bit of a shame that the quality is poor in one place or another. In addition, the microphone could have been designed a bit more with the new smartphones in mind and the adapters, which are not expensive, could have been included in the scope of delivery. Thus, the Gelid OnAir Mobile Streaming Kit offers its strengths well, but also has clear weaknesses.
