Revopoint Miraco Review: Handy mobile 3D scanner

Whether for mechanical engineering, repairs, 3D printing or in the medical field: 3D scanners are a practical thing. Simply scan the desired object and then process it on the PC. The Revopoint Miraco is a small revolution in this area, because it is more mobile than ever before, fast and works without a PC. Our test.

Revopoint Miraco test: Small giant

When I unpacked the Revopoint Miraco, I was quite surprised at how small it actually is. With a length of 200 mm, a width of 50 mm and a height of 110 mm, it is handier than most tablets and barely bigger than a smartphone. The weight of 750 grams is also pleasantly low, making the Miraco the ideal companion for on the go.

The silver and black design reminds me a little of Fujifilm cameras and looks great. But it’s not just the look that I like, the workmanship also offers no cause for criticism.

From the pleasantly rubberized handles to the rubberized front and the robust touchscreen on the back, everything feels very high-quality. But you should expect that at this price.

At the top of the front are the various cameras and lenses, including several flashes to capture even the smallest details. At the back, the Miraco has a 6-inch touchscreen display with a 2K AMOLED display that can also be folded up completely. In case you want to scan your face.

The power connection is on the left, the power button on the right and the scan button at the top. On the underside, the Miraco not only has rubberized feet, but also a 1/4-inch thread for mounting it on a tripod or similar.

The scope of delivery is also extensive. In addition to a calibration board and mats, markers or a cleaning cloth, the manufacturer includes a practical and high-quality shoulder bag, a tripod, a mini turntable and a sample bust. There is also a 65 watt USB-C power supply with two connections and a 1.8 meter USB Type-C to UBB-C cable.

But what I don’t understand: if the power supply only has two USB-C ports, why does the included mini turntable have to be operated via the USB-A to USB-C cable and is not recognized by the included USB-C cable?

Setup and operation

Setting up the Revopoint Miraco is very simple. After switching on, the menu language German can be selected. A connection to the WLAN is then established, which is used to transfer files wirelessly to the PC or notebook. Two or three steps later, you are already in the main menu and you’re ready to go.

A software update to improve the performance of the 3D scanner is already available for download and can be installed on request after the initial setup.

Once this is done, you will find yourself in the tidy interface, which is reminiscent of a smartphone camera app in places. Everything can be set up quickly and easily here, while the menu is self-explanatory. As a layman, I immediately got to grips with it without any problems.

As recommended by the manufacturer, I first scanned the enclosed bust, which was placed on the turntable for this purpose. This worked wonderfully in a very short time and – at least at first glance – very precisely.

Once the scan is complete, it can either be completed in detail or with the help of 1-click editing. Here you can easily see whether all details have been scanned and – if not – you can continue the scan to include the missing areas.

If you are satisfied with the result, you can send the scan to the PC either via WLAN or cable. This is where the Revo Scan software comes into play, which quickly recognizes the Miraco and imports the corresponding scan.

The software offers many options. For example, holes can be filled, disturbing elements in the background can be removed or even several scans can be combined into one, which is practical if you want to scan a statue or similar and place it on its side after the first scan.

Practical test and results

Ok, so everything works quickly and easily. And what about the scanning performance and the results? The Revopoint Miraco offers two scan modes for distances between 100 mm and 1,000 mm.

Depending on the size of the object, you can select close-up or long-range mode at the touch of a button, while a practical display at the top of the screen always shows whether you are at the right distance when scanning in order to capture all the small details.

Revopoint Miraco

The close-up mode is great for smaller objects at a maximum distance of 30 cm and delivers good results for most of the objects I tried (including the bust above, a Mandalorian funko figure, a flower and more).

Even in the first step of continuous scanning, most details are reliably captured and can be stitched together afterwards at the touch of a button. If a few details are missing, the scan can be continued quickly and easily to capture the other fine elements as well.

Excessively scanned details from the surroundings, which can be caused by moving the Miraco, for example, can be easily removed afterwards directly on the device or on the PC. Any holes that may be present can also be filled quickly and easily, although this works much faster and more reliably with the PC software.

To achieve the most reliable and complete results possible, you should of course scan for longer. The longer you scan an object, the more details are recorded in the result – which makes the results more complete. Alternatively, scans can also be made as individual images, which is particularly useful for larger objects. In the test, however, I found the continuous mode much better, as the results were more convincing.

When scanning, the display shows you three different screens: One for checking the white balance, one for the lighting and one for the scan itself. This means you always have an overview of all parameters.

And I have to say, the accuracy is really impressive. Of course, there is no such thing as a perfect 3D scanner, but the single-frame accuracy of 0.05 mm and scanning speed of 15 ps really capture a lot of detail, as you can see from my face scan. The Miraco also struggles with very fine details and objects smaller than 2 cm.

The level of detail drops noticeably here. Nevertheless, the performance on offer is absolutely impressive. The Miraco is a real all-rounder that scores equally well at close and long range. Other models, such as the MINI 2(close-up) or the RANGE 2 (long-range), deliver greater accuracy in the respective areas.

256 GB of system memory is also enough to store many projects and models, while the battery is also pleasantly large at 5,000 mAh and lasts long enough to scan even larger projects completely. In practice, this should be enough for around five to six hours of use.

Revopoint Miraco test: Conclusion

The Revopoint Miraco is an incredibly handy and versatile 3D scanner that comes with a practical, high-resolution touchscreen and an impressive battery life.

With the ability to scan both close-up and at a distance, the handy device is also extremely versatile and even if the scanning performance in both areas does not quite match that of dedicated devices, the Miraco accurately captures even the finest details.

Small errors can then be quickly and easily ironed out in post-processing. This is also essential to ensure that the objects are completely finished when you want to pass them on to a 3D printer.

Even as a layman, I was able to achieve very good results very quickly with the 3D scanner. There are also numerous tutorials on the device and online that explain all the functions in detail.

It would have been nice to be able to transfer the scans directly to the smartphone and a replaceable or removable battery would also have suited the device well. The performance also drops noticeably over time, especially with larger projects, but if this bothers you, you can opt for the more powerful Pro model. Apart from that, the Revopoint Miraco delivers an all-round convincing overall package.
