Bypass paywall: Tips and hacks for limitless access

In times of adblockers and declining print revenues, most publishers and magazines finance themselves through so-called paywalls. You’re probably familiar with this: an exciting headline beckons, you click on the article – and are greeted with various subscription rates. If you don’t want to do that, you can help yourself with a few tricks. We show you how to bypass the payment barriers and finally enjoy limitless Internet.

Bypassing paywall with browser extensions

Most “anti-paywall tips” are now long off the table. Call source code, convert page to PDF, incognito mode – you don’t stand a chance with really good paywalls. The following tips won’t give you a 100% guarantee of success either, because it’s simply getting harder and harder to overcome the technical hurdles (legally). Nevertheless, the presented hacks will help you with many sites, so just try them.

We’ll start with two popular browser plugins for Chrome/Edge and Firefox. You can download the extensions for free, install them and let them loose on the next paywall:

If you want to get Bypass Paywalls for Chrome/Edge, here’s how to do it:

  1. Download the ZIP file from GitHub
  2. Unzip the file and look for a folder called bypass-paywalls-chrome-master.
  3. Go into the browser extensions in Chrome or Edge.
  4. Activates developer mode.
  5. Drags the named folder to the page for import.

In the English GitHub guide you can also find all (mostly American) sites where the Bypass Paywalls add-on works.

No subscription, no article: Here’s how classic paywalls work

Tip: Some news sites have a certain article limit before the paywall is displayed. In this case, you just have to delete the cookies of the respective page or surf in private browser mode right away, as this does not store any browsing history. This way, it is no longer possible to track how many articles you have already accessed – and the paywall is history.

Bypass paywall with web tools

A second possibility to bypass the paywall is the tool https://12ft.io/. This one can’t promise you any miracles either, but there’s no harm in trying it out. Copy the corresponding URL into the address bar and let the program work for you.

Important final question: Is this all legal?

With the listed tips you are absolutely on the safe side. Both the plugins and the web tool are freely available and legal to use. Implicitly, this also means that many publishers and libraries know about their existence and have therefore taken appropriate precautions. Just test out the tools. With a little luck, many paywalls will no longer be an obstacle for you in the future.
