Amazon offers payment with Paypal service Venmo in the USA

Shipping giant Amazon is taking a big step towards the payment service provider PayPal. At least in the U.S., it will be possible to pay with PayPal’s Venmo service starting next year, both on the website and in the Amazon mobile app.

Amazon and PayPal: A long history

PayPal payments for Amazon purchases, many users have been dreaming of this for years. At least since the separation of the payment service provider from eBay in 2014, this topic has been hotly debated between the two companies again and again. Negotiations between the two companies have been going on for four years now – finally there is a breakthrough, even if it is only partial.

In the USA, Amazon will enable payments with PayPal’s Venmo service. The payment service provider announced this on November 8, 2021 as part of a press release. It states:

We’re excited to team-up with Venmo and give our customers the ability to pay by using their Venmo accounts, providing new ways to pay on Amazon.

Starting next year, U.S. customers shopping on Amazon will be able to pay for their purchases using Venmo. According to Venmo parent company PayPal, shoppers on Amazon.com or using the Amazon app will then be able to choose to pay using their Venmo credit or a bank account linked in the account.

What is Venmo, anyway?

Venmo is a mobile payment service from PayPal. The app allows logged-in users to send and receive funds among themselves and pay for purchases.

This system combines Venmo with typical elements known from social networks. For example, it is possible to split bills between users to split the cost of event tickets or cab rides. Via a news feed, transactions can be shared within the user’s own network and publicly, and details such as emojis, comments and jokes can be added.

In the U.S., the service enjoys enormous popularity and is growing rapidly. Venmo is not yet available in Germany.
