After a few years, Apple has significantly revised its two small tablets. The new iPad Mini costs 449 Euro in the basic version, the new iPad Air is available in the basic version for 549 Euro. 64 GB memory and WLAN are offered. The best equipment with 256 memory capacity and LTE modem costs 760 euros and 869 euros respectively. The Apple Pencil, which is not included in the scope of delivery, can be purchased separately for 100 Euro. There is also a Smart Keyboard available for which Apple charges 180 Euro.
The biggest innovation of the two iPads is the new A12-Bionic-SoC, which Apple has also installed in the iPhone Xs. The two new iPads are among the fastest devices on the market. Apart from the display, the two devices are relatively similar. An 8-megapixel main camera and a 7-megapixel front camera are installed.
According to Apple, CPU performance is 70 percent higher than the previous generation iPad Air, and GPU performance is expected to be 200 percent higher. With the iPad Mini, the CPU performance has been increased by 300 percent, the GPU performance is even 900 percent higher.
True Tone and Apple Pencil
The iPad Air offers a diagonal of 10.5 inches, the resolution of the LC display is 2,224 x 1,668 pixels. The iPad Mini has a resolution of 7.9 inches and 2,048 x 1,536 pixels. Both tablets support Apple’s True Tone feature, which automatically adjusts the display’s color temperature to the environment. As a further innovation, both models also support the Apple Pencil stylus, with which precise inputs such as handwritten notes or drawings can be made directly on the display. The Apple Pencil is connected via Lightning Connector.
In contrast to the recently updated iPad Pro models, Apple’s smaller tablets still feature a home button and a head height connector. Instead of Face ID, Touch ID continues to be used, which uses a fingerprint scanner integrated in the home button.
