Audi to build only electric cars in Ingolstadt in the future

The shift toward e-mobility continues. Audi wants to stop building gasoline and diesel cars at its main plant in Ingolstadt in six years. From 2033, cars with combustion engines will only be produced in China.

Audi Ingolstadt focuses on electric cars

In an interview with the “Augsburger Allgemeine” newspaper, Audi works council head Peter Mosch revealed exciting details about the automaker’s future in Germany. In just three years, half of all vehicles built at Audi Ingolstadt will be fully electric. From 2028 onwards, only electric cars are to roll off the production line at the Ingolstadt site.

According to Mosch, electrification will only begin in 2023 with the Q6 e-tron mid-size SUV: “This will be the first fully electric volume model to roll off the production line in Ingolstadt.” According to a spokeswoman for Audi, the first pre-series models are already being produced.

Only after that, production will then really pick up speed, Mosch continued: “Then comes the electric successor model to the A6, the E6. By 2029, this will be followed by the electric successors to the current A3 and A4 internal combustion models produced in Ingolstadt.”

Audi: From 2033, internal combustion only in China

At the Neckarsulm site, on the other hand, the next generation of the A4/A5 and A6/A7 families will start up in the coming years, which will keep the site busy for a sustained period. From the middle of the decade, Neckarsulm will also successively be home to purely electric models, according to an Audi spokeswoman. This will then also include the second generation of the E6.

From 2033, cars with combustion engines will then only be produced in China. Mosch said the agreed net reduction of around 7500 jobs in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm would remain. He added that redundancies for operational reasons would be ruled out until 2029.

Mosch said he expects to be able to maintain an average employment of around 40,000 in Ingolstadt in 2030. “However, there may also be 38,000 or 39,000 employees in the meantime,” said the works council head. According to Audi, a good 42,500 employees currently work in Ingolstadt, and 15,600 in Neckarsulm.
