Baby monitors from Victure are vulnerable – manufacturer does not respond

Baby monitors are supposed to help parents monitor the safe sleep of their little ones. However, there is a critical security vulnerability in the devices from manufacturer Victure that allows attackers to access the baby cameras from a distance – and has been doing so for over 10 months.

Millions of devices threatened

Security researchers from Bitdefender report that they have been trying to inform manufacturer Victure about a critical security vulnerability for over 10 months. However, so far without success. Now the researchers have gone public with full information about the vulnerability, which exists in various baby monitors and security cameras from the manufacturer.

Especially the baby monitor PC420 from Victure is specifically affected, as it says in the corresponding post. The manufacturer’s own cloud platform IPC360 is also not protected against attacks, and a total of around four million devices are affected, according to the researchers’ estimate.

In the worst case, attackers could gain complete control of the devices and gain access to videos, the researchers added. The identification scheme for cloud users is so simple, they said, that potential attackers could simply guess valid IDs and use them to gain unlawful access to data.

Local attacks in the network are even easier because, among other things, known standard login data is used. This would allow attackers to access the live video streams of baby monitors and security cameras with extremely little effort.

Victure does not respond

According to Bitdefender researchers, manufacturer Victure was first informed about the critical vulnerability back in November 2020. Even after several reminders, they are said to have received no response to date. Accordingly, the manufacturer has not yet provided a security patch, so all potentially affected devices are still unprotected.
