BMW i4 gets design and equipment update

The BMW i4 is one of the most popular electric cars in the traditional Bavarian manufacturer’s lineup. Now the sleek electric saloon is getting an update. The company has not only given it a visual makeover. The standard equipment is now also a little more lavish.

BMW i4 gets more standard equipment

BMW has announced that it intends to update the BMW i4 for 2024. On the one hand, this concerns the design. The manufacturer has slightly redesigned the vehicle’s iconic kidney grille (the radiator grille). The structure of the LED headlights has also been adapted. Among other things, the BMW i4 will now be able to play a veritable light show when the vehicle is unlocked.

There are also innovations to announce in the interior. Sports seats with special perforations are fitted as standard. According to BMW, the cockpit has been designed to be much clearer. Among other things, fewer buttons are to provide a better overview. The manufacturer wants to focus more on touch controls.

This applies in particular to comfort settings such as seat heating or steering wheel heating. Whether this will really make them easier to use remains to be seen. After all, many drivers still prefer analog buttons. The trend towards more standard equipment in the interior is pleasing. Ambient lighting, for example, is now on board as standard.

Heated and folding exterior mirrors are now also standard. The same applies to the in-house navigation system. From now on, the Bavarians want to offer BMW Live Cockpit Plus in every i4. The navigation system not only scores points with reliable route guidance, but also takes charging stops into account when calculating the route.

Four models to choose from

The new addition to the i4 series is also exciting. The BMW i4 xDrive 40 is an all-wheel drive model that should be able to offer a range of between 444 and 548 km. A system output of up to 295 kW promises sporty handling, which is evident in the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, among other things.

The i4 is now available in four different versions. The BMW i4 eDrive35 forms the basis. This offers 210 kW and should be able to offer a range of between 386 and 500 km. With acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds, this model should be sporty enough for the average consumer. One step higher is the BMW i4 eDrive 40, which scores with a range of between 468 and 600 km and an acceleration of 5.6 seconds.

The BMW i4 M50 xDrive is the top of the range. This also comes with all-wheel drive and two electric motors. BMW specifies an acceleration of 3.9 seconds for a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. Given a system output of 400 kW and 795 Nm of torque, this is hardly surprising. The manufacturer specifies a range of between 413 and 522 km for the top model.

Prices and availability

If you opt for the base model, you will have to live with a maximum charging speed of 180 kW with direct current. The other three models offer a maximum of 205 kW. The four sedans can then be charged with 11 kW via alternating current at the wallbox at home, for example. We do not yet know what prices BMW intends to charge for the facelifted BMW i4. However, the manufacturer intends to comment on this in May 2024.
