Fallout 4 gets next-gen update

Almost nine years after its release, Fallout 4 is getting a major update. This is intended to bring the role-playing game hit from developer Bethesda back to the present day and capture the hearts of new and old gamers alike.

It’s certainly no coincidence that Fallout 4 is getting an update now of all times. After all, the series adaptation is currently running on the streaming service Amazon Prime Video. And with great success. Bethesda will certainly have thought that this moment of hype could be used to revive the game. The last significant update for the mammoth game was in 2017.

For true gaming fans, however, the update is unlikely to be big news. After all, Bethesda promised back in 2022 that it would bring the role-playing game to the current generation of consoles with a facelift. As filming for the current series was certainly already underway at the time, the whole thing was probably planned well in advance.

What’s new?

The file size of the patch gives reason to hope that a lot has improved compared to the original game. While the PC download takes up 14.5 GB on your hard disk, the patch for the Xbox Series X and S is 22.7 GB in size. If you want to get the update on the PS5, you’ll even need to have a whole 55 GB on your console hard drive.

If you own a PS5 or Xbox Series X/S, you could already immerse yourself in the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout. However, they took advantage of the consoles’ backwards compatibility and simply played the versions for PS4 and Xbox One on the next-gen consoles. Now the latest generations of game consoles from Sony and Microsoft are getting their own clients.

As is now almost common practice with next-gen updates, you have the choice between different modes. Firstly, you can select a quality mode. Here you get a sharp 4K resolution, but have to be satisfied with 30 frames per second. If you prefer 60 frames per second and are happy with a dynamically scaled resolution, select performance mode.
