Google Pixel 9: Leak talks about satellite connection and new modem

We are an estimated six months away from the release of the Google Pixel 9, but the rumor mill is already churning. A new leak reveals further details about the smartphone series, which is apparently to include three devices this time.

The new leak about the Google Pixel 9 once again comes from Kamila Wojciechowska for Android Authority and is said to reveal information from insider circles. What is particularly exciting is that Google is finally to give the new smartphones a better modem, as this was somewhat lame in the previous generation.

Specifically, the new Samsung 5400 modem is now to be installed in the Pixel 9 series, which should offer more performance and better energy efficiency. According to the leak, there are also advantages in terms of stability – something the Pixel devices desperately need.

However, the leak states that the new and improved modem will be installed in all Tensor G4 devices. This would also include a potential Pixel Fold 2 and a new 5G tablet, which is currently codenamed “Clementine”.

Satellite SMS in the Pixel 9 series

Satellite-based messages have become more important in Android 15. The new Samsung Exynos Modem 5400 is also capable of this thanks to NTN support (non-terrestrial 5G). According to the leak, this feature will initially be implemented via T-Mobile in combination with Elon Musk’s SpaceX satellite network.

A new app called “Satellite Gateway” will be used for this, which will enable easy communication with emergency services via a feature called “Emergency SOS”. After answering a few questions, it should be possible to send an emergency text message to emergency contacts and then communicate directly with emergency services to request help.

Many of the questions should already offer predefined answer options to make it possible to answer them more quickly. Of course, the whole thing also works if the smartphone has no internet access. However, satellite telephony does not appear to be possible for the time being. The rumors are of course still unconfirmed and should therefore be treated with caution.
