HDD controllers: Marvell celebrates 5 billion hard disk chips

Manufacturer Marvell is an old hand in the field of HDD controllers. The company has been supplying controller chips for hard disks for 25 years. Already in the coming month, according to statements by the group, the mark of 5 billion HDD controllers shipped is to be reached.

Marvell HDD chips are legendary

Well, which HDD control chip (controller) is in your hard drive? Chances are good that it’s a model from manufacturer Marvell. Marvell has been offering HDD chips for 25 years and SSD controllers are now also in the company’s portfolio. The mark of 5 billion HDD SoC chips shipped will soon be reached.

In the corresponding press release, the company celebrates this achievement: “This success is a testament to the longevity of Marvell’s HDD business,” it says.

Even in the age of SSDs, classic HDDs continue to enjoy high popularity, largely due to their low prices and high storage capacities. Cloud storage systems in particular continue to rely on HDDs.

The ongoing digital transformation is driving the proliferation of cloud services, digital payments, artificial intelligence and 5G, requiring higher capacities in data storage. For this reason, cloud data centers are looking to HDD storage to meet the growing demand for zettabytes.

HDD manufacturers have become scarce in the market due to declining demand. Besides Marvell, only manufacturer Broadcom is still vying for the favor of customers, whose HDD controllers are provided in hard disks by Toshiba, Seagate and Western Digital.
