Ikea Dirigera Hub unveiled: New smart home gateway including app

The new smart home gateway Ikea Dirigera Hub is official. Together with the new “Ikea Home smart” app, the Swedish furniture store has now introduced the Hub, which together should make using smart home devices even easier. Matter is also supported.

What’s inside the Ikea Dirigera Hub

The new Ikea Dirigera Hub is compatible with the Matter smart-home wireless standard. The new standard is designed to make smart-home devices more secure and work together more intelligently. The successor to the Home Connected Home over IP standard will also enable compatibility between devices from different manufacturers, so now the new Ikea Bridge.

Just 27 mm high and 112 mm in diameter, the Dirigera hub serves as the control center in the new Ikea ecosystem. Thanks to the new software, it also supports more devices and product groups than its predecessor from the TRÅDFRI series. Otherwise, the hub offers an Ethernet port and a USB-C port for power supply.

If the hub passes the currently still open certification, not only all Ikea smart home products are supported, but also those of other manufacturers. In addition, there is the new “Ikea Home smart” app, which should be even more accessible.

This is what the new Ikea app can do

New products can be quickly and easily integrated into one’s own smart home with the app, individually, in pairs and in groups. This allows different scenes with predefined functions to be created and significantly more individualized.

However, the current gateway and the app are to be supported for at least three more years and supplied with security updates and patches, according to current knowledge on the part of Ikea.

The Ikea Dirigera Hub and the new Home smart app are scheduled for release in October 2022. The function to control one’s own smart home while on the move is expected to follow in the summer of 2023. And that’s without having to resort to third-party apps. At The Verge there are exclusively some first videos that show the setup of the Dirigera Hub. It is currently unclear how expensive the whole thing will be.
