Lightyear: Atlas Technologies is insolvent
The company behind the Lightyear solar car, Atlas Technologies, has gone bankrupt. Since a new vehicle was only recently unveiled, the Dutch company’s announcement comes as a surprise. It is not known what will happen next with the solar car.
Insolvency filed and payments stopped
The company has officially announced that it has filed for bankruptcy. Prior to this, a motion had been filed in a Dutch court to stop all payments to Atlas Technologies. This request was also granted. The fate of the company is now in the hands of the insolvency administrator. Reinoud van Oeijen of Holla Legal & Tax has been appointed as insolvency administrator. According to a press release from the company, close cooperation is planned, the aim of which is to satisfy the interests of both customers and employees.
Recently unveiled new vehicle
The announcement that Lightyear is insolvent comes as a surprise to experts as well as the general public. Just this month, the company had unveiled a new vehicle at CES in Las Vegas: the Lightyear 2 solar car. The five-seat hatchback with solar cells and electric drive is scheduled for production starting in late 2025. Since its unveiling, 60,000 pre-orders have already been received. It is not yet clear how the Lightyear 2, which followed the limited model Lightyear 0, will proceed.
