MacBook Pro M3: Multi-monitor support to follow via software update

Just yesterday, Apple unveiled the new MacBook Air M3, a compact notebook that is significantly more powerful. However, the new edition is also able to control two displays simultaneously when closed. Something that even last year’s MacBook Pro M3 cannot do. Of course, this is not at all possible, which is why Apple has now confirmed precisely this function for the more powerful laptop – as a free software update.

MacBook Pro M3 gets multi-monitor support

The 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 is currently able to display an external monitor with a resolution of up to 6K at 60 Hertz in addition to the internal display.

Via HDMI, 4K at up to 120 Hz is possible. Only the more powerful variants with the M3 Pro or M3 Max chip support multiple monitors and refresh rates of 4K/144 Hz via Thunderbolt 4 or 4K/240 Hz via HDMI.

The MacBook Air M3 presented yesterday, on the other hand, already supports two external displays ex works, albeit only when closed. Resolutions of 6K at 60 Hz and up to 5K at 60 Hz are possible here.

The fact that its own “Pro” model cannot handle this is not only a thorn in the side of Apple fans. That is why the 14-inch MacBook Pro M3 will soon also be equipped with multi-monitor support, as the manufacturer has confirmed to the website 9to5Mac.

This new feature will be delivered as a free software update and is based on the functions of the MacBook Air. This means that two displays will also be possible in future when the notebook is folded.

It is currently unclear whether the new function will be included in the upcoming OS update macOS 14.4 or whether it will be released at a later date. macOS 14.4 Sonoma is already available as a release candidate and could be released later this week. It is also conceivable that the new version of the operating system is already pre-installed on the MacBook Air M3, which is to be officially delivered from Friday.
