Messenger Rooms: Video conferencing soon also on Facebook

After the rapid growth of video conferencing services like Zoom, Facebook is also jumping on the bandwagon.

With “Messenger Rooms”, Facebook wants to enable its users to hold video conferences in the future. Initially only for 20 participants, in future even for 50. Similar to Zoom, only a link needs to be sent to invite other participants. A Facebook account is not absolutely necessary for this.

However, Facebook will build security measures into the system right from the start so that strangers cannot simply enter. It is also possible for the organizer to kick unwanted participants.

The collection of data for advertising sales is repeatedly criticised by Facebook. However, the company has already announced that there will be no personalised advertising. However, video rooms of friends will be displayed, which you may be able to join.

But there are not only positive features of the new service. The connection to the Facebook server is encrypted, but there is no end-to-end encryption. According to Facebook, this is due to its performance. With WhatsApp, Facebook uses end-to-end encryption, but only allows 8 people to participate. Zoom also does not offer end-to-end encryption.

Facebook Rooms will be rolled out worldwide in the coming weeks and is not already available in every country.
