MSI SPATIUM M580 FROZR: PCIe 5.0 SSD launches with a huge heat sink

It is now well known that modern and fast SSDs need to be cooled effectively. However, MSI takes this to the extreme with the new PCIe 5.0 SSD MSI SPATIUM M580 FROZR: The M.2 SSD with cooler is a whopping 71.65 mm high. However, it is also extremely fast with read speeds of up to 14,600 MB/s.

Even fast PCIe 4.0 x4 SSDs can hardly manage without a heat sink these days. The so-called heatsink is easily three to four times as high as the narrow memory itself. But we have never seen a height of 71.65 mm before.

However, the MSI SPATIUM M580 FROZR is just as high. This is thanks to the gigantic FROZR cooling system, which is designed to keep the brute performance of the PHISON E26 PCIe Gen 5 controller and state-of-the-art 3D NAND flash modules with 232 layers in check.

MSI speaks of a passive tower heatsink, which should be able to reduce operating temperatures by up to 20 degrees Celsius thanks to core pipes and aluminum fins. Sounds good, but you have to have that much space in a case in the first place.

Functions such as LPDC ECC and E2E Data Protection ensure data integrity and reliability. MSI offers a full 5-year warranty on the SSD, up to 3,000 TBW and an MTBF of 1,600,000 hours.

Up to 14,600 MB/s

The M.2 SSD is available in the 2280 form factor with capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB and 4 TB. The medium model achieves the maximum speeds. Here, 14,600 MB/s for sequential reading and 12,700 MB/s for writing are available. However, the 4 TB variant is only slightly behind with 14,100 MB/s / 12,600 MB/s.

The performance is supported by a DRAM cache buffer with 2 GB, 4 GB or even 8 GB depending on the memory capacity and an SLC cache, which should enable fast data access and minimized latency times for gaming, content creation and professional applications.

Software for monitoring the SSD status and for data backup is integrated into the MSI Center. It provides important information such as the status of the drive, the capacity used and the operating temperature.

Price and availability

The MSI SPATIUM M580 FROZR is now available in stores for those who are not afraid of the huge heat sink and want to get the maximum performance. It starts at an RRP of 335.00 euros for the memory with 2 TB capacity. The model with 4 terabytes of storage space is priced at 580.00 euros. Additional details can be found on the official website.
