New corona measures announced: gamescom 2020 cancelled

The measures to contain coronavirus will be prolonged but weakened. This was announced by the German government at today’s press conference. However, Markus Söder, Bavaria’s Minister President, also mentioned an extension of the bans on major events.

Until the end of August 2020, major events will continue to be banned. This also applies to gamescom 2020, which was to take place in Cologne from 25 to 29 August 2020. Although concrete regulations are to be made by the individual federal states, we can assume that the hundreds of thousands of gamers will not travel to Cologne this year to try out the new games.

There is no official cancellation of the local event yet, but this will certainly be done soon. However, gamescom has already announced that the event will take place online instead. The formats Opening Night Live and gamescom now will be expanded. Of course, this is a completely different feeling and cannot be compared to the trade fair. So we can be curious to see whether this will be a success and whether just as many gamers will participate.

gamescom is one of the largest events in Germany and in 2019 had around 373,000 visitors from over 100 countries. More than 1,100 exhibitors were represented at the Cologne exhibition center. So far, ticket sales are still open.
