New feature: Spotify now offers AI playlists

We recently reported that Spotify wants to raise its monthly subscription prices again. However, it seems that the new money raised will also go directly into new features. The streaming service is now offering a beta version of a brand new AI function. This should significantly speed up the creation of your own playlists.

Spotify with new AI feature

One of Spotify’s recipes for success is, of course, the support provided by artificial intelligence. After all, the service knows all about its users’ musical tastes and suggests new musicians, songs and playlists based on this. But now the company apparently wants to go one step further. Similar to chatbots such as ChatGPT, Spotify will now also allow you to type in so-called prompts. These are commands that are given to an artificial intelligence.

Spotify

The whole thing does not take place in a complex programming language. Instead, you communicate with Spotify just like a human being. This should be helpful if you want to create a playlist but don’t have the time to search for suitable songs. The streaming service also gives direct examples of the new feature in its official announcement. For example, you can use the prompt to express your wish for an “indie folk playlist that warmly embraces your brain”. Spotify then creates a song list with the appropriate songs in a flash.

A new playlist in a flash

A wedding, a milestone birthday, a big party – there can be many reasons that call for a suitable playlist. The new feature should save Spotify users a lot of time. On top of that, such a function naturally invites users to experiment. According to Spotify, it should even be possible to create a playlist with just a prompt containing emojis. How good the result will be in these cases is, however, questionable.

Natural language is still likely to be the most effective. The streaming service states that a combination of genre, artist, year and mood is probably the most helpful if you want to achieve customized results. Incidentally, the results should not only take the prompt itself into account. The AI should also take the other listening and user behavior of subscribers as a guide.

Initially only in the UK and Australia

However, only two countries will be able to enjoy the new feature for the time being – the United Kingdom and Australia. However, only a beta version is available to users there too. However, if the beta test proves successful, German users should also soon be able to enjoy the new AI playlists on Spotify.
