Nintendo Switch 2 to be as powerful as Xbox Series S in the dock

We can expect the successor to the current Nintendo console by early 2025 at the latest. The rumor mill surrounding the Nintendo Switch 2 has been churning for some time now. Most recently, for example, there was talk of strong performance thanks to NVIDIA DLSS. Now YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead is once again fuelling the rumor mill. According to this, the new console in the dock should offer graphics performance on a par with the Xbox Series S.

Nintendo Switch 2 in the dock with 4 teraflops

YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead has once again put out feelers in the direction of NVIDIA and, according to his own statement, learned some exciting details about the Nintendo Switch 2. According to this, the console could be equipped with 12 GB or even 16 GB of RAM.

More interesting, however, are the details on the graphics performance of the hybrid console, which is set to increase significantly, especially in the docking station. Contrary to previous expectations, this is said to be 4 teraflops, which would put the console on a par with the Xbox Series S (4 TFLOPs) and PlayStation 4 Pro (4.2 TFLOPs).

The Ampere graphics chip is said to be equipped with 1,536 CUDA cores and offer quite high clock frequencies, which would be slightly less than the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050, which achieves a computing power of 5.1 TFLOPs.

Greatly reduced in handheld mode

However, this only applies if the console is used in the docking station on the TV. Then 4K resolutions would actually be possible. In handheld mode, on the other hand, the performance should be greatly reduced. The aim is to reduce power consumption to less than 5 watts.

Nintendo may also want to do without a fan. According to the leak, the GPU clock rate is to be reduced to 800 MHz, but it should still be possible to achieve 1080p resolution, which is a significant improvement on the current model. However, the battery life should be significantly improved and also be noticeably longer than that of the Nintendo Switch.

According to the latest rumors, the Nintendo Switch 2 will even be fully backwards compatible with the current console. As always, however, these rumors should be taken with a grain of salt. Let’s wait and see when Nintendo unveils the console, as gamescom in August is being skipped again this year.
