Recall action – Volkswagen must replace 56,000 control units in the Golf VIII

Volkswagen has to recall 56,000 Golfs due to infotainment system failures. In Germany, the recall affects 26,000 vehicles.

Failures in the infotainment system

In the Golf VIII, there are apparently recurring problems with the screen of the radio and navigation system. For this, the faulty control unit is probably responsible. Remedy should now bring the exchange of the control unit and an update. The affected cars show failures of the central monitor for the infotainment system, only after hours the system is responsive again. The cause of the problem is a control unit, according to reports from the automaker. According to reports, this error “occurs en masse”, this is now to be fixed by replacing the component and updating the software. VW calculates the labor time for the replacement at 5 hours. These are not the first software problems at VW in recent times. Just last summer, there were repeated problems with the software. As a result, software chief Christian Senger lost his post in July 2020. In addition, the production of the ID.3 was also affected by problems with the software last spring.

Voluntary service measure

VW’s recall is not an action ordered by the Federal Motor Transport Authority. This is a voluntary service measure by Volkswagen. To this end, VW intends to provide affected customers with a replacement car for the duration of the workshop visit. Furthermore, customers are also to receive compensation. Either in the form of a voucher for an inspection or another service from the carmaker’s range. By visiting the workshop, unfortunately, the existing problem can reportedly not be completely fixed. The service measure cannot remedy “the unfortunate circumstance that the touch-sensitive bar for adjusting the radio volume and the air conditioning is unlit at night and thus effectively inoperable.” The customers concerned will be informed about this by Volkswagen AG by mail in the next few days. It is not yet known how expensive the action will be for the manufacturer.
