Rumor mill: Apple wants to rename the Apple-ID

Anyone who purchases an Apple device must first create an Apple-ID. To a certain extent, this is the user’s customer account. Now, however, the tech company apparently wants to find a new name for the ID.

Apple-ID becomes…

In English, the abbreviation ID stands for identity card. In a way, the Apple ID is exactly that. Only in the Apple cosmos. But anyone who has already gotten used to the term as an owner of one of the tech company’s devices will soon have to get used to it. At least that’s what consistent sources are reporting. According to these sources, the Californian company is planning to establish a new name as early as this year.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the Apple ID will then become the “Apple Account”. This may sound foolproof at first glance. However, as the term Apple ID will have burned itself into the brains of many a user in recent years, the tech company is apparently currently working at full speed behind the scenes to make the transition as uncomplicated as possible.

Apple is aiming for the third or fourth quarter

Bloomberg cites industry insider Mark Gurman in its report. He has always proved to be a reliable source in recent years. We can therefore probably rely on the time period he has provided. Gurman says that the switch from Apple-ID to Apple Account is likely to take place in the second half of 2024.

Anyone with a little knowledge of the Apple cosmos will realize that the whole thing coincides with the major software update to iOS 18. This is due to be rolled out in September 2024. Accordingly, it is probably obvious that the renaming will also take place at the same time. But will it just be a renaming? Apparently yes.

According to Gurman, nothing will change in terms of functionality and scope with the Apple Account compared to the Apple ID. So why rename it? After all, the tech company has established the term over the years. Apparently, Apple also wants to attract a few new users. Since the word Account is much more obvious, this is probably the reason.
