Apple officially unveiled the new MacBook Air 2022 during WWDC2022. The slim notebook comes with a completely new design and houses the manufacturer’s new M2 chip, which offers significantly more performance, but is just as energy-efficient. We have all the info and prices.
MacBook Air 2022 comes with a new design
It was perhaps the highlight of Apple’s WWDC2022 developer conference. Even though the announcement of a new Air notebook was considered certain beforehand, the new MacBook Air 2022 surprised some.
Apple brings the only 11.3 mm thin and 1.2 kg light notebook in a fresh design including four new colors, silver, trace gray, gold and blue. At the same time, the company has shrunk the display edges and introduces the notch known from the MacBook Pro. This increases the display area to 13.6 inches.
They’re installing a Liquid Retina display with LED backlighting and IPS technology in the new MacBook Air 2022, which comes in at a resolution of 2,560 x 1,664 pixels at 224 ppi and 500 nits of brightness. The True Trone technology is of course also on board.
In addition, there is a 1080p webcam, a quad-speaker system and a battery life that is supposed to be sufficient for 18 hours of video playback. The new Air once again does without a fan and therefore works silently.
Charging is done using a Magsafe cable that pulls out easily and securely. And for the first time, it even charges at up to 67 watts thanks to fast-charging technology – although the power adapter has to be purchased separately. Wirelessly, the MacBook Air 2022 communicates via Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.0. In terms of ports, there are only two times USB Type-C with Thunderbolt 4 and a 3.5 mm jack.
MacBook Air with M2 chip
The technical highlight of the new MacBook Air 2022 is the M2 chip, which further advances the energy efficiency of the M1. The M2 ARM processor is said to offer 18 percent more CPU performance, 35 percent more GPU performance and 40 percent more Neural Engine performance.
Up to 24 GB of LPDDR5 memory with a bandwidth of 100 Gbit/s is supported, he said. The M2 offers, depending on the version, an 8-core CPU and up to 10 GPU cores. In addition, there are 16 neutral engine cores. The new Air is said to be significantly faster than its 2020 predecessor, especially when editing videos, with up to 38 percent more performance promised.
Prices and availability
The new MacBook Air 2022 is expected to be available in stores in July 2022. It starts at an MSRP of 1,499 euros for the model with an 8-core CPU and GPU, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of SSD storage. The variant with an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, as well as 512 GB of storage starts at 1,849.00 Euros.
As always, Apple pays a premium for RAM and storage upgrades. 16 GB RAM and a doubling of the storage to 512 GB cost an additional 230 Euros. However, the current MacBook Air with M1 chip remains in the program and is offered directly from Apple starting at 1,1199 Euros.
