Samsung Galaxy Z Slide: new patent shows exciting possibilities

Samsung has filed a new patent for a smartphone with an expandable display that could be used in the Samsung Galaxy Z Slide. The device’s screen can be customized for different purposes and even allows transparent content display.

The patent was officially filed back in June 2021, but only now came to public attention thanks to LetsGoDigitital, who came across the entry. According to the entry, Samsung is planning a third model off the mainstream with the Samsung Galaxy Z Slide, which could exist alongside the Z Fold and Z Flip model series.

On 97 pages, the patent describes a smartphone with an expandable and rotatable display, which could thus fulfill various purposes. On the one hand, the display can be slid out sideways to provide a larger surface. But it should also be possible to tilt the display, for example, to enable laptop-like operation.

However, the most exciting feature is the transparent use of the display. A polarizable panel is used for this, which allows for various scenarios. As the image published in the patent shows, it is possible to navigate on the smartphone, for example, while the transparent display shows symbols, such as the arrow to the destination, in the image of the real environment in mixed reality mode.

Whether the patent will actually ever make it into a smartphone and when we can expect it remains to be seen – as always. However, the functions of the Samsung Galaxy Z Slide are certainly exciting.
