Samsung LPDDR5X-10666: New RAM for next-gen smartphones and notebooks

Samsung has introduced a new, particularly fast main memory for next-generation smartphones and notebooks. The new LPDDR5X-10666 achieves a data throughput of 10.7 gigabits per second (Gbps) and is even larger at 32 GB.

The new LPDDR5X-10666 memory is significantly faster than previous Samsung solutions and offers 25 percent higher speed and 30 percent higher capacity than previous Samsung memory.

At the same time, the chip, which is manufactured using the 12 nm process, is said to be significantly more energy-efficient, which of course improves the battery life of devices, especially in smartphones and notebooks, but should also be an advantage in the server sector.

With a data throughput of 10.666 Gbps (which Samsung rounds up to 10.7 Gbps), it is undoubtedly one of the fastest memories on the market. 32 gigabytes per chip should be possible. On-device AI functions in particular should benefit significantly from the higher bandwidth and larger memory, Samsung states in the press release.

Unfortunately, Samsung does not provide any tangible details on production or the planned areas of application. Smartphones, notebooks and AI devices are considered likely.

The new memory could be used in flagship smartphones from well-known manufacturers as early as the end of 2024, as mass production is set to start in the second half of the year, after which it will be delivered to manufacturers.
