Verbatim offers one-time recordable SSD in Japan

With the SSD SWOVA128G, manufacturer Verbatim in Japan offers an external SSD hard drive that can only be written to once. It has a capacity of 128 GB and comes with a warranty of 10 years. For example, electronic tax returns are stated as the core application area.

A USB 3.2 compatible, long-lasting SSD for single recordings wants to be the Verbatim SSD with the model identification SWOVA128G, which the manufacturer has presented there now in Japan. According to the manufacturer, the storage medium is used to back up electronic transaction data and electronic contracts, but also for secure data storage for government agencies, municipalities, research institutes and companies, and to back up photos and videos.

Against the backdrop of Japan changing its electronic recordkeeping laws at the start of 2022, as Tom’s Hardware notes, the new Electronic Record Retention Law (ERRL) in Japan stipulates that data relevant to tax law may only be kept in purely electronic form.

This is exactly where Verbatim’s new WOV series SSD should come into play, as it comes with a 10-year warranty, making it especially durable and retaining backed-up data without the possibility of it being overwritten or erased.

Classical external SSD

At first glance, Verbatim’s new WOV series model is just a regular external SSD hard drive. It measures 46 x 108 x 9.5 mm and weighs around 55 grams. It is connected via USB-A or USB-C, and the corresponding cables are included in the scope of delivery. Thanks to USB 3.2 Gen 1, it supports speeds of up to 5 Gbit per second.

However, it gets interesting with the software, which only enables writing to the SSD in combination with Windows 11 or Windows 10. Without this software, the SSD cannot be written at all.

Reading, on the other hand, is possible in exFAT format from all devices like Mac, Chromebook, iPad, Android or Windows devices. However, created partitions cannot be deleted or overwritten. Formatting the SSD including partitions is also not possible.

The manufacturer does not yet provide details about the availability and prices of the Verbatim SWOVA128G. It is also unclear whether the model will be offered outside of Japan.
