If you have updated your operating system to Windows 11, you might have already noticed the slower performance of SSDs compared to Windows 10. According to Microsoft, the storage units misbehaved, which has now been fixed with patch KB5007262. The update is now available for download.
Microsoft update KB5007262 improves SSD performance
The fact that SSDs suddenly work slower under Windows 11 than they did with Windows 10 has now apparently also been noticed by Microsoft, which is making improvements with Update KB5007262.
The user fg2001 took a closer look at an NVMe SSD from the manufacturer SK Hynix. In the comparison between two equivalent systems, the SSD managed 20 percent weaker random write values in Windows 11 than it was the case with the Windows 10 system. This result was not only achieved with the modern NVMe SSD from Hynix.
The patch is supposed to reduce or completely eliminate the misbehavior of SSDs when using Windows 11. The optional update is now available for download free of charge for all users. The patch notes state:
This patch addresses an issue that affects the performance of all drives (NVMe, SSD, hard disk) in Windows 11 by performing unnecessary operations during write operations.
Apparently all hard drives affected
According to Microsoft, the problem only occurred when the NTFS USN Journal (Update Sequence Number Journal) was enabled – which was basically the case for system drives and the default “C:” hard drive. Contrary to previous assumptions, the problem does not only affect SATA SSDs and NVME SSDs, but also magnetic hard disks (HDD).
Furthermore, the update KB5007262 fixes numerous other bugs and introduces some new features. The patch also addresses some audio errors in connection with Bluetooth devices or Windows Explorer crashes, which should finally be a thing of the past.
