What does “POV” mean on TikTok, Instagram and Co?
You’ve probably seen the abbreviation “POV” while scrolling through your social media channels, either as a hashtag or in the content itself. POV videos and POV photos have become a popular trend on Instagram and TikTok, so it’s exciting to know what’s behind the term. We’ll tell you.
POV Meaning: the “Point of View”
Abbreviated POV stands for the English expression “Point of View”, which means as much as the own point of view or point of view. So what is meant is a video or photo taken from the creator’s point of view.
Of course, the concept is anything but new and has nothing to do with social media: Every first-person shooter is played from the perspective of the game character, and many of you might also be familiar with the spectacular recordings from action cams like the GoPro. Following on from this, more and more POV videos can now be found, for example showing a car or motorcycle ride from a first-person perspective, such as this TikTok video.
In photography, POV is popularly used to play with different perspectives and depict, for example, buildings, vacation photos or certain situations in a more approachable and authentic way. So, unlike a selfie, it’s about depicting a subject as you would perceive it with your own eyes.
POV as comedy content
Another use of POV is videos in which a particular topic is presented from the point of view of the main character. Often this is funny content, such as life from the point of view of a cat or – crazier always goes – a Monday morning from the point of view of a coffee machine. However, emotional or serious topics are also treated in this way. Meanwhile, there are even POV challenges, in which TikTokers and Instagrammers produce the most outlandish videos on certain topics. Because we had the cat theme: This video gives you a taste of what POV comedy can look like 😉
By the way, in case you didn’t know: TikTok now allows videos up to ten minutes long.
