ChatGPT: Cooperation with “Wall Street Journal” announced

ChatGPT and well-known media outlets such as the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times are planning to cooperate soon. This has now been officially announced by OpenAI, the company behind the world-famous chatbot.

ChatGPT will be fed with new data

OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has pulled off a huge coup. Following the recent official launch of GPT-4o, the talking version of its own chatbot, the AI company has now dropped the next bombshell. In future, it will be possible to access current and archived articles and media from well-known media houses such as the Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, the Sun and the Times of London.

And this agreement is set to last. According to OpenAI, a contract has been signed for several years. Behind the well-known newspapers is none other than self-made billionaire and media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his News Corp. group.

Based on the processed messages, ChatGPT will then be able to provide its users with the latest news in short form. This will probably also include exclusive content that would otherwise be hidden behind a paywall. However, one should not forget the training purpose that the data fulfills for the Large Language Model and its database. After all, a well-functioning language model must also be fed with reliable data.

Cooperation long overdue

News Corp. is not the first agreement OpenAI has reached with a major media company. The well-known Axel Springer Group is already working with the company. This includes newspapers such as BILD and WELT. In addition, ChatGPT already has access to articles from the “Financial Times” and “Le Monde”.

OpenAI is taking a step forward with its collaborations. After all, there have been repeated accusations of unauthorized access to newspaper articles in the past. This even led to a court case with the renowned “New York Times”. And there are further proceedings that OpenAI is likely to face.

US newspapers in particular have repeatedly accused the company of using newspaper articles to teach ChatGPT without permission. However, OpenAI does not believe that copyright has been infringed in these cases. Instead, the company repeatedly refers to the fair use principle enshrined in US law, which permits the further processing of copyrighted data.
