Adata launches the Gammix S50 lite

With the M.2 SSD with PCIe 4.0 for gamers under the XPG brand, Silicon Motion’s SM2267 is also a new controller on the market. So far, chips from Phison have dominated.

Technical details

The XPG Gammix S50 lite has much less power, hence “lite”. Adata specifies the maximum possible performance for sequential reading at 3,900 MB/s and for sequential writing at 3,200 MB/s. With random reading and writing, the SSD reaches 490,000 and 540,000 IOPS respectively. The values of the Gammix S50 lite are thus well below those of other PCIe 4.0 SSDs with Phison E16 controllers. Even the XPG Gammix S50 is specified with up to 5,000 MB/s and 750,000 IOPS. The SM2267 controller is not yet available from us with this chip. So it is the debut of this chip. The performance of the chip is low, as can be seen in the data sheet from Silicon Motion. Only the 8-channel controller SM2264 is supposed to provide a little more power. Up to 6.500 MB/s and 700.000 IOPS have been announced for this controller.

The new XPG Gammix S50 lite is offered with 1 TB or 2 TB storage capacity. The whole then as usual in the M.2-2280 form factor with the flat cooling plate. The manufacturer refers to the Gammix S50 lite as an SLC cache for the unspecified 3D NAND as well as a DRAM cache. Unfortunately this indicates that there is no dedicated DRAM chip on the SSD. This would mean that the system memory serves as a buffer and the SM2267XT controller variant is used without its own DRAM. This assumption has not yet been further confirmed by Adata.

Availability and price

The cost of the SSD for the 1 TB version is approximately 146 Euro and for the 2-TB version at about 283 Euro. The XPG Gammix S50 lite comes with a five-year warranty and AES 256-bit encryption. Both models are available immediately.
