Airbnb: New regulation prohibits the use of security cameras

Anyone offering their home, apartment or living space on Airbnb must be prepared for a new regulation in future. The company has now put a complete stop to the use of security cameras.

Privacy: Airbnb issues ban on surveillance cameras

Anyone offering their home, apartment or parts thereof on Airbnb must comply with a new regulation in future. As the San Francisco-based company has now announced on its own blog, the guidelines for the use of security cameras or surveillance cameras have been adjusted.

Previously, the use of cameras was permitted in certain areas, such as common rooms or corridors. From April 30, 2024, this will come to an end, as security cameras may no longer be used indoors in rented apartments.

According to the company, the aim of the globally applicable ban is to create a uniform regulation and simplify the rules relating to security cameras and other devices. The majority of apartments and apartments listed on Airbnb do not use security cameras anyway, so the change only affects a small proportion of the listings, it added.

However, video doorbells such as the Ring Doorbell Pro 2 (our test) and devices for monitoring the volume remain permitted, as these would contribute to the security of apartments and properties according to the provider. However, the hosts must ensure that appropriate devices are used.

Surveillance cameras for outdoor areas will also remain permitted, but hosts must clearly indicate the use and positioning of outdoor cameras, which must also not show indoor areas. However, they are prohibited “in outdoor areas where a particularly high level of privacy is expected – for example in outdoor saunas or showers.

Airbnb has granted all providers a transitional period until April 30. After the deadline, reported violations will be severely punished and, in the worst case, may even result in the listing being removed or the account being deleted.
