AirPods: Automatic Device Change & Spatial Audio

Apple has introduced two new features for the AirPods, which probably sound good not only on paper.

The Spatial Audio Update for AirPods Pro simulates a surround sound experience by using directional audio algorithms. If the played back audio tracks offer 5.1 or 7.1 sound, Spatial Audio is automatically activated. Dolby Atmos is also supported.

In addition, AirPods will automatically switch to the device currently in use. The new feature will be introduced with iOS 14, so imagine you’re watching a movie on your iPad, but you get a call on your phone. When you answer the call on your phone, the AirPods automatically switch to that device so you can talk to them in comfort. When you resume the movie, they switch back to your iPad.

Owners of AirPods or AirPods Pro will have to wait a little longer until the new operating systems are available. Then the newly introduced features can be used.
