In addition to the 15-inch m15, Alienware’s new AMD lineup naturally also includes a 17-inch device, which is advertised as the “world’s most powerful AMD advanced laptop”. Equipped with an AMD Ryzen 9 6980HX, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX3080 Ti and 64 GB of RAM, the Alienware m17 R5 has a lot of power under the hood.
Alienware m17 R5 in detail
The Alienware m17 R5 shares many of its specifications with its little brother in the form of the m15 R7. The biggest change is of course found in the display, because here you install a 17.3-inch panel that resolves optionally in Full HD with 165 Hz or 360 Hz or even in UHD (3840 x 2160 pixels) with 120 Hz.
The FHD panel has a brightness of 300 nits and a 100% sRGB color space coverage. The UHD panel is even brighter with 500 nits. A 100% Adobe RGB coverage is offered here. The battery capacity is a maximum of 97 watt hours.
The notebook weighs in at 3.3 kg and is equipped with a 720p webcam, as well as dual array microphones. There is also an AlienFX illuminated keyboard here, which is also optionally offered with CherryMX ultra low-profile mechanical switches.
AMD Ryzen CPU and choice in GPU
A chip from AMD is used as the CPU. Here you have the choice between three models:
- AMD Ryzen 7 6800H (8-core/16-thread, 20MB cache, up to 4.7 GHz max boost)
- AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX (8-core/16 thread, 20MB cache, up to 4.9 GHz max boost)
- AMD Ryzen 9 6980HX (8-core/16 thread, 20MB cache, up to 5.0 GHz max boost)
The graphics options are considerably more varied. Here, the choice is between NVIDIA (from RTX 3050 Ti, up to a maximum of RTX 3080 Ti with 16 GB GDDR6) or AMD (Radeon RX 6700M with 10 GB GDDR6 or Radeon RX 6850M XT with 12 GB GDDR6). Thanks to AMD Smart Shift, the 6850M XT reaches a maximum of 165 watts, while it’s 155 watts for the RTX 3080 Ti.
This is joined by up to 64 GB of DDR5 RAM with a 4800 MHz clock rate and up to 4 TB of M.2 SSD storage. WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 are also available, WiFi 6E optionally from summer. Windows 11 is used as the operating system, optionally also in the Pro variant.

The Alienware m17 R5 gaming notebook is now available in Dell’s online shop, although not yet in all presented variants. The price starts at an RRP of 2,148.99 Euros.
