Alphabet: Google Group increases revenue significantly

Alphabet achieved significantly higher sales in recent months than in the same period of the previous year – partly due to the pandemic. Total sales in the last quarter were now $55.3 billion, up 34 percent.

Google and YouTube make gains

By far the largest share of revenue was generated by Google Search: here, the revenue generated was $32 billion – around 30 percent higher than in the same period last year. YouTube grew even more strongly, with revenues of around six billion dollars, 50 percent higher than in the same quarter of the previous year. The success of the platform can also be seen in the usage figures. It is reported that YouTube recently had two billion active users at least once a month. More than one billion hours of video were streamed daily, and the TikTok alternative YouTube Short now has around 6.5 billion views per day.

Cloud and development business with losses

By contrast, things look less rosy for the group’s cloud and development business. Although the revenue of the cloud division increased by 46 percent and now amounted to around four billion dollars; nevertheless, the bottom line was a loss of 974 million dollars. The situation is very similar in the area of promising technologies. Here, sales also increased significantly (+47%), but losses also increased: in total, a loss of 1.14 billion dollars was incurred.

Profit rises significantly

When looking at the Group as a whole, however, this hardly matters. Alongside total sales of $55.3 billion, there is a profit of $17.9 billion, which represents an increase of more than 100 percent compared with the same period last year – when only $6.8 billion was generated. However, this figure also includes pure valuation gains from startups in which Google has a stake. They account for around $4.5 billion of the quarterly profit.
