beyerdynamic Free BYRD: First True Wireless In-Ear Headphones from the Audio Professionals

With the beyerdynamic Free BYRD, the German audio professionals from Heilbronn have presented their first True Wireless in-ear headphones that want to convince in terms of sound. Add to that powerful technology and a long battery life, and you’re looking to compete with the big names in in-ears and take on the Sony Linkbuds S (our review) or brand new Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 (our review).

beyerdynamic Free BYRD in detail

With the new TWS in-ear headphones beyerdynamic Free BYRD, the manufacturer wants to appeal to music fans around the world and enters the highly competitive segment with strong values. In terms of sound, the model wants to score with the authentic and world-renowned beyerdynamic sound that comes out of the drivers via Bluetooth 5.2.

They have a considerable size of 10 mm and cover a comparatively high frequency band of 10 Hz to 22,000 Hz. AAC and even Qualcomm aptX Adaptive are supported as audio codecs to provide a detailed sound with brilliant highs and powerful bass.

“We are not the first to bring a True Wireless headphone to the market. However, we are the first to release a True SOUND wireless headphone. The beyerdynamic Free BYRD is designed to make everyday music listening a seamless pleasure,” reveals Edgar van Velzen, CEO of beyerdynamic.

11 hours of battery life and hybrid ANC

With a weight of about 7 grams per earbud, the Free BYRD are also no lightweights.  However, they realize an amazingly high battery life of 11 hours. Charging is via USB Type-C and even wirelessly in the Qi standard. A charging time of 10 minutes is enough for up to 70 minutes of playback.

The ANC (active noise cancellation) works with a digital hybrid technology and should thus automatically adapt to the ambient noise. If necessary, the ambient noise can easily be faded in again via the Transparency Mode. For example, you can have a short conversation without taking out the in-ear headphones.

The innovative Qualcomm dual 2-mic cVc technology is supposed to ensure a convincing voice quality during phone calls or meetings. A total of four microphones, two each on the Free BYRD’s left and right earpieces, ensure pleasant and natural phone calls.

Google Fast Pair also makes it possible to connect to the end device in seconds, and as Amazon- and Apple-certified True Wireless headphones, the Alexa and Siri voice assistants are also available.

Touch commands are used for operation, which is facilitated by the Light Guide System in different light colors. For a comfortable fit with optimal and secure fit, you can choose between five different earpieces made of skin-friendly silicone.

New app with hearing test

Further adjustments and updates can also be made with beyerdynamic’s innovative MIY app. This is designed to further improve the sound of the beyerdynamic Free BYRD thanks to “MOSAYC – Attention to Detail with Mimi Sound Personalization.” After only a two-minute listening test, the sound and settings of the headphones can be personalized with the app and completely adapted to the individual hearing.

With the equalizer, audio content can be further adjusted to one’s own preferences using predefined profiles. In addition, the headphones can always be kept up to date with the latest technology with the app.

Price and Availability

The beyerdynamic Free BYRD true wireless in-ear headphones are available now in Black and Grey from the beyerdynamic online store and Amazon. The manufacturer’s MSRP is 229.00 euros. For more details, check out the official product website.
