BMW and Eon offer exciting wallbox package

Many electric car owners charge their batteries using solar energy. BMW apparently knows this too. In collaboration with Eon, the traditional manufacturer has developed a suitable wallbox package for such drivers.

BMW offers practical wallbox package

Anyone who owns a PV system often also uses an electric car. After all, the electricity generated from solar energy can then be conveniently used to power the vehicle. However, a lot of energy can sometimes be lost on the way from the solar panel to the wallbox and ultimately to the vehicle. A customized wallbox and backend solution can solve this problem.

BMW now wants to offer its customers both with the support of Eon. Their latest product, the “Connected Home Charging Package”, consists of a Smart Energy Module and a Wallbox Plus. According to BMW’s own press release, the package will be available for plug-in hybrids and fully electric vehicles from the BMW and Mini fleet.

The focus of the system is on so-called surplus charging. A PV system is said to have a surplus when the home energy storage system is full and no other products in the household can draw electricity. Ultimately, the energy generated is not used, but is fed back into the electricity grid. With surplus charging, the surplus energy is then simply passed on to the car.

Charging an electric car becomes cheaper

This brings a decisive advantage for the customer: the electric car can be charged much more cheaply. This is made possible by Eon’s special tariff, where prices are calculated on a daily basis. Accordingly, charging in the summer, when experience shows that a lot of solar power is produced, should be possible at a reasonable price.

The press release also mentions bidirectional charging. This means that the solar energy generated is stored directly in the car. However, this will not become a reality at BMW until 2025. A new generation of vehicles will then be coming our way in the form of the so-called “New Class”. This will include the Vision New Class X, which BMW recently teased.

Peppered prices

A wallbox for the home was still a high investment years ago. In the meantime, prices have calmed down considerably. The new package from BMW and Eon, on the other hand, is associated with a rather sporty price starting at 1,769.00 euros. However, this already includes the cost of installation, which is carried out by Eon itself.
