Canon EOS R100: New DSLM camera for beginners presented

After a new camera from Fujifilm, Canon has now also introduced a new mirrorless system camera. The new Canon EOS R100 is particularly compact and is aimed primarily at beginners in terms of price and range of functions.

The Canon EOS R100 in detail

With dimensions of 116.3 mm x 88.1 mm x 58.7 mm and a weight of 356 grams for the body only, the new Canon EOS R100 APS-C camera is a compact lightweight. It has been specially designed for those who want to get into photography with an EOS R model.

Equipped with a 24.1-megapixel sensor complete with Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus with fast and accurate subject detection, the camera detects and tracks people’s eyes both through the viewfinder and via the LCD to keep the subject in focus.

It offers a continuous shooting speed of 6.5 frames per second with One Shot AF and 3.5 fps with tracking AF. Videos are recorded by the system camera in 4K resolution at up to 25 fps. At Full HD, even 60 frames per second or even 120 fps at 720p resolution are possible.

Creative possibilities

The comfortable grip, electronic viewfinder, intuitive controls and straightforward user interface should make it easy for beginners and advanced users to operate the camera with all its features.

In addition, the Canon EOS R100 has a special creative assistant that is supposed to help with image composition. This can be used, for example, to adjust background blur, adjust brightness and contrast, or adjust the color balance.

The camera is compatible with Canon RF and RF-S lenses, giving you a wide catalog to choose from. The camera is also compatible with a variety of accessories, including microphones, Speedlites and more.

Thanks to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, images and videos can be quickly uploaded and shared to your smartphone or tablet when paired with the Canon Camera Connect app. In addition, the app also allows remote control of the camera from a distance.

Canon RF 28mm F2.8 STM: Compact and lightweight fixed focal length

To go with the compact camera, Canon has also introduced a new lens. The Canon RF 28mm F2.8 STM is a particularly lightweight and compact pancake lens for full-frame. With its versatile 28mm focal length and fast f/2.8 aperture, it is suitable for a wide range of shooting and is said to deliver a convincing shallow depth of field with appealing bokeh even in low light.

The RF 28mm F2.8 STM features a combined lens ring that can be used to control settings as well as for manual focusing.

This allows intuitive adjustment of settings, while quickly switching to manual focus when needed. The STM focus drive also operates particularly quietly and allows for smooth transitions, which should be of particular interest to filmmakers.

Prices and Availability

The system camera Canon EOS R100 will find its way into stores from the end of June 2023, and in the process will apparently be offered exclusively in two different kits as an option. It starts for the EOS R100 kit with RF-S 18-45mm IS STM at an MSRP of 699.00 euros. The same kit with additional RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM lens is priced at 929.00 Euro.

The compact full-frame RF 28mm F2.8 STM lens follows in July at a suggested retail price of 369.00 euros. More details on the camera and the lens are provided by the official websites.
