ChatGPT Plus gets plug-ins

The premium version of ChatGPT will be equipped with plug-ins this week. These allow the program, for example, Internet searches or access to a wide variety of apps, in and with which it can independently perform tasks.

Internet connection for latest knowledge

Probably one of the biggest innovations is the Internet connection for ChatGPT that comes with the plug-ins. This will allow the program to acquire the latest knowledge in a wide variety of areas. So far, it is at the level of 2021 – the year when the basic development of the program ended. The Internet connection represents a significant change, as it will allow the AI to independently keep pace with further developments in the world. Furthermore, it will make it possible to ask the AI targeted questions about specific web pages.

Numerous new functions

Other plug-ins also take advantage of the Internet connection. For example, in the future it will be possible for the AI to independently access apps and perform tasks with or in them. This includes sending orders, for example. The actions that can be executed depend on the respective plug-in. Known examples include creating recipes, calculating the calorie content per portion, or placing an order based on a recipe.

The hacker rez0 penetrated the API of ChatGPT in March of this year and was able to find out which services the program is connected to. This in turn allows conclusions to be drawn about the range of functions that the plug-ins will offer. The connected services include Slack, Expedia, Opentable and Pricerunner. In total, more than 70 plug-ins are available.

For the time being, plug-ins and Internet access will only be available to users of the premium version. In the long term, however, OpenAI would like to include them in the basic version as well. Further plug-ins are to be developed. For this purpose, a handout has already been made available.
