So-called e-ink displays are actually primarily known from e-readers. However, Asus presented a notebook at Computer 2024 that also uses a screen with energy-saving panel technology. However, this is not used as the main screen, but as a secondary screen in the lid.
Asus Project Dali with an exciting second screen
At Computex 2024, the technology world was once again able to take a look at upcoming products from manufacturers. Cooler Master, for example, presented a 57-inch mini LED screen. A notebook presented by Asus is much more unusual. The so-called Project Dali is a notebook that has a second screen with an e-ink display.
This is located in the lid and measures 12 inches. The user can customize the content of the screen to suit their mood. The focus here is on being able to use the 1,600 x 1,200 pixel display for notebook decoration. Anyone who has ever embellished their laptop with stickers and been annoyed by ugly adhesive residue after removing them will be delighted.
You can develop images yourself
Asus Project Dali is to receive exclusive software. The software will allow you to develop your own images and designs. Only static images are possible. The color E-Ink display needs at least ten seconds to change an image. Really cool: You should be able to draw content and also display it on the second display. The name Project Dali makes all the more sense.
Everyone has to decide for themselves whether the feature makes sense. What is certain, however, is that the e-ink display is not a power guzzler. Although the images, designs or drawings are permanently displayed, it does not consume any power. After all, it does not need to be illuminated in order to function. However, there is one disadvantage compared to classic stickers.
Typical problems of e-ink displays such as poor contrast and grayish colors cannot quite keep up with classic stickers. However, it is still an exciting feature. I can well imagine the second display in compact business notebooks from Asus in particular. However, a release is still up in the air. It is currently only a concept.
