Dell’s XPS 17 gets more power and better graphics

Like its smaller brother, the 17-inch model of Dell’s new XPS lineup gets a performance and graphics upgrade. Intel’s Tiger Lake processor and the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 TI are installed.

CPU and GPU are improved

In the new edition of the Dell XPS 17 (9710), the notebook gets a better CPU and also better graphics. The 17-inch model of the XPS series had not received a re-release until last year, but this year the performance is further tweaked as well as the graphics are improved.

With the upgrade, the Dell XPS 17 gets the new Tiger Lake H processor. The i5-11400H, i7-11800H, i9-11900H and i9-11980HK models are available. There are also new GPU options for the notebook. Thus, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 with 70 watts can be selected in addition to a 45 watt Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050. For the RAM, up to a maximum of 64 GB DDR4 is possible and the storage can be equipped with up to 4 TB PCIe 4×4 SSDs.

Up to 4K UHD+ Panel

When it comes to the display, the 17 incher is left with a choice between an FHD+ IPS panel with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels or a 4K UHD+ IPS panel with a resolution of 3,840 x 2,400 pixels. Here, the UHD+ panel is DisplayHDR400 certified and covers up to 99 percent of the DCI-P3 color space. Dell continues to rely on very narrow edges for its InfinityEdge displays. Unfortunately, an OLED display like in Dell’s XPS 15 is not available. However, there is the option of a touch display, which of course has an impact on the weight. The notebook normally weighs 2.11 kg and 2.51 kg with the touch display option.

A Thunderbolt 4 port replaces the previous Thunderbolt 3 port. The battery is 97 Wh. However, the webcam of the Dell XPS 17 has not been improved; it remains a 720p webcam. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 are used for communication.

Availability and prices

The new Dell XPS 17 should be available in Germany from June 01, 2021. It is priced at 1,400 US dollars in the US, prices for us are unfortunately not yet available.
