DTS Play-Fi home theater technology brings surround sound to the TV via Wi-Fi

Top-class wireless surround sound via Wi-Fi is promised by the new DTS Play-Fi home theater technology, which has now been launched for the general public. This promises true surround sound experience without additional hardware, but compatible TVs with DTS Play-Fi home theater will be launched in the third quarter of 2021.

Surround sound via Wi-Fi

With the novel DTS Play-Fi home theater technology, the provider from California wants to address two application areas in particular. On the one hand one wants to improve thereby the sound picture of televisions, which must do without the employment of well sounding boxes due to their compact building method today.

On the other hand, it is intended to provide a coherent aesthetic in the application area, which usually suffers from surround sound systems connected with speaker cables and HDMI cables.

TVs with Play-Fi home theater are scheduled to launch in the third quarter of 2021 and are compatible with the existing ecosystem of Play-Fi soundbars, speakers and amplifiers currently on the market.

In doing so, the sound offers a whole range of configurations to wirelessly enhance a TV’s audio performance and bring lifelike surround sound to any room. Among them is the ability to use the TV’s built-in speakers as part of the surround system, or upgrade them with a Play-Fi enabled soundbar or discrete Play-Fi enabled front speakers to improve audio quality without unsightly wiring between the TV and external speakers or electronics.

Flexible deployment options

Play-Fi enabled speakers can be quickly and easily added as surround speakers to enhance the listener with sound. In addition, up to two Play-Fi enabled subwoofers can be included for deep, room-filling bass.

Also exciting is the Play-Fi feature, which allows the TV to be grouped with Play-Fi enabled speakers for music and TV audio in multiple rooms, as well as listening through headphones via app.

DTS Play-Fi automatically adjusts to the number of speakers connected to the TV and provides a modular way to meet the needs of each room or upgrade over time by purchasing additional components.

In doing so, the DTS Play-Fi ecosystem features the largest collection of products in wireless audio playback. Hundreds of speakers, TVs, soundbars, set-top boxes and A/V receivers from more than 30 leading consumer electronics brands, including Philips, Hisense, Sharp, Acer, HP, Pioneer, Onkyo and Klipsch, are supported.

Mobile users can also enjoy the compelling sound enabled by AirPlay, Spotify Connect and DLNA at up to 24-bit and 192 kHz thanks to the compatible DTS app on Android, iOS, Amazon Fire and Windows. More information about DTS Play-Fi is available directly on the homepage.
