According to current rumors, mail-order giant Amazon is planning to launch its own smart TVs in the US in the near future. Amazon TVs are already in use in India, but they are built by third-party manufacturers. Now they are apparently entering the smart TV market themselves.
Starting as early as October
As the magazine BusinessInsider exclusively reports, Amazon plans to enter the smart TV business as early as October – albeit initially only in the US. Amazon’s own development is to be offered in a display size of 55 to 75 inches and can of course be controlled with the help of its own voice assistant Alexa.
The operating system is to be based on the Fire TV OS, and the company is currently working with the Chinese company TCL for the hardware. In the future, however, complete in-house developments will also be published.
Whether Amazon will offer its own smart TVs with Amazon Basics branding, as is currently the case in India, is currently unknown, as are further technical specifications for the TVs. Exclusive sales via the company’s own web store would make a market launch at competitive prices conceivable, since the marketing costs are kept within limits. Amazon could pass on these savings directly to the end customers and thus enter the market with an attractive price.
Amazon India currently has three smart TVs on offer: they come in 43-inch, 50-inch and 55-inch sizes and rely on a 4K UHD LED display, a frame rate of 60 Hz and Dolby Atmos speakers. The 50-inch model is priced at around 427 euros.
